That "one promise" can also be used for such a meaning. Especially if he plans to hang out with her and cultivate feelings within these 30 years. He has already said they were compatible before, its likely that they will be again.

I'm glad that his altering the sequence of events hasn't started a butterfly backlash... yet. Authors often go crazy when dealing with the butterfly effect repercussions. Let's see what happens within these 30 years.
He should have asked for her hand in marriage or at least flirted a bit. MC is good but a little too goody-two-shoes.
